BORGER

The Borgerhout area of Antwerp hosts a fast-growing, avant-gardistic and dynamic art scene. The tri-annual Friday-night openings dubbed Borger offer an alternative yet complementary program to the Nocturne, further cementing Antwerps reputation as epicentre of contemporary art. Borger takes place three times a year in galleries and art spaces in the Borgerhout, Zurenborg and Berchem areas.

 

Nocturne

The renowned Nocturnes are a series of recurring, simultaneous Thursday-night openings hosted by a collective of established Antwerp Art galleries. Nocturne takes place every six weeks in galleries, museums and art spaces in the Zuid area of Antwerp.

During a 5 month stay in an abandoned house in a rural area in British Columbia, Kevin Schmidt composed electronic dance music, known as EDM, to accompany the light animation the artist had installed onto the house. At night the music was broadcasted over a small FM broadcaster. At the end of the stay Kevin made this video document of one of the compositions in a cinematic fashion.

With Ukraine, FOMU brings a comprehensive retrospective of the work of Boris Mikhailov (UKR, °1938) to Belgium. The exhibition assembles over 300 works focused on Mikhailov’s homeland of Ukraine. Replete with the sexual frustrations and voyeurism that characterised the relationship, the exhibition introduces us to Henry’s obsessions with photography. Creating an ephemeral monument with local specialties, such as fashion or chocolate, Yan Tomaszewski turns the Stadspark’s plinth in Antwerp into a sacrificial altar. For a period of six months, every two weeks, a new offering of a giant chocolate hand is made, feeding The Boogeyman – a mysterious creature regularly appearing on the plinth.
